Anxiety in pets

Certain animals or breeds do have a more nervous temperament than others, while traumatic events or exposure to particular stressors can make even a normally calm animal, stressed and perturbed. Fireworks, a trip to the vet, thunderstorms, small children, an abusive situation, change of owner, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, change of house, the addition of another pet -- these are just a few of the situations that can cause heightened levels of anxiety in your pet.

Many pets are also exposed to a variety of day-to-day stresses. They live essentially on fast food (with not much nutritional value) and are often left alone for hours at a time, frequently in fairly confined environments. These factors can contribute to high levels of stress and anxiety. In addition, pets are very attuned to their owner's stress levels. If you are anxious and stressed, this will impact on your pet. This can be a particular problem when taking part in competitive events like pet shows and competitions. When there is stress or trauma at home PetCalm can help your pet cope without compromising health or causing undesirable side-effects such as sedation and nausea that may be seen with conventional medicines.

      The natural way

Many pets get anxious – but the good news is that there is a lot that can be done in the home to make them feel more at ease! The key is to helping them feel comfortable, while demonstrating to them that all is well by making sure that you do not convey any anxiety YOU may feel to them - as you know, animals are very sensitive to the moods & emotions of their owners!

Dogs in particular can become very anxious and distressed during a lightning storm or when fireworks are let off nearby. If your pet becomes distressed, try not to fuss too much, as this may be interpreted as attention – perhaps triggering further anxiety in the future. Rather stay calm and provide your pet with the necessary tools to cope. This may include a ‘den’ for them (empty cupboard with a blanket and favourite toys) as dogs will try to find a place where there is one opening – where the perceived ‘danger’ can be watched. Cats will usually seek out shelter under a bed or behind a cupboard. Best to leave them be, and not bother them.

      How has PetCalm helped others?

Our little Maltese is a real baby whenever it comes to a visit to the vet! If we give her a dose of PetCalm just before leaving and one when we are there there is such a big difference which makes everyone much happier. Thanks for this lovely remedy which is easy to administer - as you say truly without fuss or bother!" - Greta

"We give our dogs petcalm just before we have guests over as they always become excited and nervous when there are new people in the house. It helps very much." - Bridgetta R.

"Our Siamese cat has always been very nervous and jumps at the slightest sound. She hates the sound of vacuum cleaners and is very sensitive to noise of all kinds. Sometimes I feel very sorry for her as she can't even eat properly when she is nervous and even has developed eczema. Since we have been giving her Petcalm every day we have seen a big improvement and she is more happy and relaxed. I can recommend this product to anyone with a highly strung sensitive cat or dog." - N. D.

      How do I use PetCalm?

PetCalm comes in convenient dissolvable granule form. The tiny granules are easy to administer to animals of all sizes and personalities and are simply sprinkled on the back of the tongue and left to dissolve. Alternatively, they can be mixed with a little wet food or a treat. No fuss and bother!

      Dosage:
Cats and small dogs: Large pinch of PetCalm sprinkled into the mouth.
Small to medium dogs: Two pinches sprinkled into the mouth.
Medium to large dogs: 1/4 cap of granules sprinkled into the mouth.

Preventative: Two to three doses of PetCalm may be safely given every day given as a nerve tonic for pets with nervous dispositions as well as those who have anxiety disorders due to traumatic histories.

Acute: PetCalm may also be used as needed for acute anxiety which is often linked to a stressful event (vet visits, thunderstorms, fireworks or boarding kennels). Administer every hour until symptoms subside.

Management tips for stressed or anxious pets

      • Although it’s a natural urge to comfort your pet during times of distress, by giving your pet attention during a frightening episode such as a thunderstorm you may actually encourage the behaviour.
      • Ensure that your pet feels secure, turn up the radio or put on the TV to mask loud noises and provide a warm, cosily lit area for your pet to sleep in and then do your utmost to ignore any unwanted behaviour. Not an easy thing to do, but persevere.
      • Be consistent with your reaction to your pet. The whole family needs to follow the same routine when dealing with your pet’s anxieties otherwise your pet will become confused and even more insecure.
      • Consider consulting an animal behaviourist if your pet’s behaviour is affecting their quality of life.
      • The sooner a problem is addressed the easier it will be to modify the behaviour.
      • Start socialising your new pet at an early age - get them used to trips in the car, strange noises, yelling children, noisy rubbish collection trucks, etc.
      • Regular daily exercise is essential to help keep your pet healthy and fit, as well as in peak mental health. Bored, frustrated animals can hardly be expected to behave well!
      • A confident pet is a happy pet and will be an asset to any owner.
